Jean-François Lalonde, Ph.D.

me

Bonjour!

I am a Computer Vision Scientist at Tandent Vision Science, a research company with the goal of solving fundamental problems in computer vision.

I have just received my Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, under the supervision of Profs Alexei (Alyosha) Efros and Srinivasa Narasimhan. My thesis is titled "Understanding and Recreating Visual Appearance Under Natural Illumination" and I was funded by a Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship since 2009. Have a look at my publications and accompanying software and data for more details.

I spent the summer of 2006 working in a startup company in Pittsburgh named Penthera Technologies. I got to play around with PDAs, cell phones and high-bitrate streaming video. The feature I developed became an important part of their flagship product.

Prior to that, I was a Master's student at the Robotics Institute, working under the supervision of Prof. Martial Hebert and Dr. Nicolas Vandapel on outdoor mobile robots. I designed an efficient data structure that enables very fast processing of 3-D features computed from laser data on-the-fly. It is now a core component of the CTA project.

I come from the beautiful city of Québec, Canada, and graduated with honors in May 2004 from Laval University in computer engineering. I spent three years as a research assistant in the Computer Vision Lab, and spent a summer in the National Research Council in Ottawa, doing research on multi-projector displays.

I enjoy spending time with my wife Barbara and daughter Héloïse, race triathlons, play tennis, piano, and read.
